REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE (RLE)

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is a surgical procedure that replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to correct vision problems. It’s similar to cataract surgery but is performed primarily for vision correction rather than treating cataracts. RLE is an option for individuals who are not good candidates for LASIK or other corneal refractive surgeries, especially those with high refractive errors or certain eye conditions.

How it works:

  • The natural lens is removed through a small incision.
  • An IOL is implanted to replace the natural lens.
  • The IOL corrects refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Benefits:

  • Corrects refractive errors:

RLE can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts.

  • Prevents future cataracts:

Replacing the natural lens eliminates the possibility of developing cataracts later in life.

  • Permanent correction:

The IOL is not affected by age, providing a stable correction.

  • Alternative to LASIK:

RLE is a good option for those who are not candidates for LASIK or other corneal surgeries.
